4) Community Centres
A report on the public process for naming our local community centres is
planned to come forward in February. It impacts the signage for the new
building adjacent to the Tennis Courts. I expect the report will suggest
that the current Nassagaweaya Community Centre revert back to the
historic reference of Brookville Hall. The new facility can then be
named the Nassagaweya Community Centre, home of the Nassagaweya Tennis
Club.
The Tennis facility will be ready for Spring play! If you want more
information on membership, contact Stacey Porter, email above)
The clubhouse will only be about 1/4 of the building, with the remainder
being open for Community use. Ideas for programming in this new facility
are welcomed. Please forward your suggestions to me or to
Patrick D'Almada (email above) at the Town.

9) Updates: Airstrip - This
private airstrip on McNiven Road, north of Derry Road, is under Federal
Jurisdiction, and is outside of Town/Region/Conservation/Niagara
Escarpment authority. All activity has either ceased, or is under Federal
Regulations. It appears that two situations have been confused. The
Bragdons, owners of the property, have had a license
(Federal Jurisdiction) since 1986 for a grass runway on their property
which they use 1 -2 times a week for their personal 2 passenger
aircraft. The Bragdon's business includes building hangers. The confusion
likely arose from an ad indicating that they were building a hanger for
commercial use. However, this hanger is being built at the Waterloo
Airport, not McNiven Road. There is no intent to add aircraft to the
McNiven Road location which has 'flown under the radar' - ie without
complaint - for 24 years. Recent fill has been added to level the
runways, outside of the regulated Conservation Area.
Brookville Busses - Churchill
Estate Parents have worked with School Trustee Donna Danielli and will
be presenting an Appeal to the Board to exclude Churchill Estates from
the Bus Policy. This will be heard Wednesday night, Feb. 2nd.
10) Emerging Issues
Water Testing - On January 24th, CBC Market Place aired
a report on questionable practices by Water Test companies, including
tests given in Milton. Beware if you are approached by a company
offering to give a free water test in your home. These companies will
happily sell you thousands of $$s worth of equipment. Their tests
identify minerals that naturally occur at safe levels in water -
but reacting to their chemicals in a very yucky way. You should test
your water at least twice a year. Bottles are available for pickup &
drop-off at Brookville Vet Clinic and Town Hall. If you are approached
or have questions, contact me for more information.
St. Mary's Quarry - The date for the first OMB
pre-hearing session regarding the revocation request from St. Mary's
Cement of the Ministerial Zoning Order stopping the proposed quarry has
now been set for Friday, April 1st. (I'm resisting commenting on the
obvious.) Milton and Halton are preparing for this hearing. The Stop the
Quarry community committee is also watching closely.
Steeles & Tremaine Intersection has long been
recognized as a lethal intersection. Regional staff has indicated that
the intersection meets warrants for a four-way stop, and plan to proceed
with this in the Spring, prior to a more permanent solution which will
realign Tremaine Road to more this intersection further east. Many of us
have reservations that this is an appropriate solution, and are seeking
other solutions.
